What is YNSA?

Acupuncture Needle
Juan Hahn & Dr. Yamamoto

YNSA is a complete system of assessment, diagnosis, and acupuncture treatment.

It originated in the 1960s and was first presented in 1973 at the Ryodoraku Congress in Osaka. What began with five basic points on the forehead has evolved into a broad system of microsystems or somatotopies, located not only on the scalp but also in other areas of the body.

After auriculotherapy, YNSA is today the most widely practiced microsystem acupuncture worldwide.

Dr. Yamamoto —affectionately known as Toshi— revolutionized Japanese acupuncture. Trained as an anesthesiologist and gynecologist, he began treating patients with osteoarticular pain in his hometown of Nichinan. A fortunate experience, when he injected a patient without anesthetic and the pain disappeared, led him to explore acupuncture deeply and to develop his own innovative and effective method.

His hospital, built with dedication and perseverance, was the setting for more than 2,000 surgeries performed with acupuncture anesthesia —including cesarean sections, appendectomies, hysterectomies, and amputations— as well as countless treatments for hemiplegia and chronic pain.

Beyond his medical brilliance, Dr. Yamamoto is an example of humility, perseverance, compassion, and generosity as a teacher.

What does YNSA offer?

Acupuncture Needle

YNSA works with diagnostic, therapeutic, and diagnostic-therapeutic areas distributed throughout the body, especially in:

  • Scalp
  • Neck
  • Abdomen
  • Upper and lower limbs
  • Pubis

Among them, the Ypsilon points are particularly important. Located in the temporal region of the skull, they correspond to the internal organs according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (Zang-Fu), the meridians, and also to anatomical structures from a Western perspective.

Procedure

Needles are usually retained for about 30 minutes. They are applied ipsilaterally in cases of musculoskeletal pain and contralaterally in cases of hemiplegia. The technique has very few contraindications and virtually no side effects.

In my clinical practice

I combine YNSA with other forms of acupuncture —Classical TCM, Neurofunctional Scalp Acupuncture, distal acupuncture, auriculotherapy, Tung acupuncture, Vietnamese acupuncture, or wrist and ankle acupuncture— together with complementary techniques such as electroacupuncture, photobiomodulation, laser, and Acutaping. This integrative approach enhances outcomes and broadens therapeutic possibilities.

Clinical applications

Acupuncture Needle

YNSA has proven to be highly effective in:

  • Acute and chronic pain management
  • Neurological conditions, especially post-stroke sequelae
  • Hearing loss, tinnitus, and other sensory disorders
  • Digestive, endocrine, dermatological, cardiovascular, and emotional disorders
  • A wide range of other conditions, thanks to its ability to stimulate neuroplasticity and activate the body’s own healing mechanisms

My experience with Dr. Yamamoto

Acupuncture Needle

In 2017, I had the privilege of accompanying Dr. Yamamoto during consultations at his rehabilitation clinic in Miyazaki and at his hospital in Nichinan. His life example, dedication to his patients, and passion for teaching left a deep mark on my path.

This course is also a tribute to my teacher, a recognition of his legacy and the generosity with which he has shared his knowledge with the world.
